Flexible Display
Flexible displays are itself a great possibility for design and innovation. Flexible displays are a phenomenon in itself. They, when launched into the market, possess the power to change the way we see the technology today.
A little history!
For so many years we all are using the technology in a flat glass screen. From 1990's when the computers and televisions were so big and to the modern times when the screens have become too slim, the tech scientists are going a step forward now. The very concept of flexible technology is also illustrated in some of the techy films. The flat screen devices are covered with a glass or plastic covering. But in the curved screens glass covering will be totally eliminated, leaving tech scientists to develop something they have never seen before.
Bendable Display
We can see today that some of the devices such as Samsung Galaxy s7 edge and LG g flex offer bendable display, it does not mean their display are flexible. Bendable and flexibility are far flung. Their are curved LED's in the market, some of which are OLED's that have better image quality and flexibility. They too are curved and bend. Apple Japan is making 14 cm full HD LCD. The display will use plastic for covering(substrate) that will replace the typical glass covering. It will enable the screen to become flexible and bendable.
How is Flexibility achieved?
With so much advancements in polymers, the scientists have come up with a way to create plastic polymers that will not break down under constant bending stress, and will refrain to their original shape when the stress is removed. This enabled the tech giants like Samsung or Apple to come up with the concept of flexible display, keeping the display consistent adapting to the change the screen. The 3 large mobile manufacturers Apple, LG and Samsung are currently experimenting with the flexible display, and we are expected to see a flexible device by 2022.
Benefits of Flexible Display-
- The biggest advantage of flexible displays is it's durability. Since the screens would be flexible, they would be less prone to damage. So broken screen might become a thing of the past. But that thing is yet far to achieve.
- Flexible display can be used in other industries as well. For ex, in clothing, it could change our clothes design and color as per the environment or our liking's. But this is a far off imagination from now.
- The flexible devices could become as large as a large led screen and as small as a touch wrist watch. So, the concept of TV's, watches, tablets, or phones could altogether mix up.
- Cars could also use curved screens as more of the dashboards are going digital nowadays.
